WordPress runs most of the web — which is exactly why it's the most attacked. Keeping it updated isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between a website that's an asset and one that's a liability.

Why neglected WordPress sites break, slow down, or get hacked

WordPress doesn't look after itself. Core, plugins, and themes all get updates — and when those updates stop, the cracks don't show straight away. The site looks fine right up until the morning it doesn't. By then it's usually an emergency, and emergencies cost a lot more than upkeep.

Updates pile up, then something breaks

Skip enough core and plugin updates and one day the site shows a white screen instead of your homepage — often right before a big enquiry would have landed. The fix is rarely quick once things have drifted that far out of date.

Out-of-date plugins are how sites get hacked

96% of new WordPress vulnerabilities are found in plugins, not in WordPress itself. A plugin you installed once and forgot about can quietly stop being patched — and a plugin that's still switched on but no longer maintained is an open door.

Old PHP can take the whole site offline

PHP is the software your WordPress site runs on. Hosts retire old versions on a schedule, and when yours is dropped, an unmaintained site can stop working overnight. Keeping PHP on a current, supported version is dull, invisible work — until it's the thing that saves your site.

"Every few months" is already too slow

Once a WordPress flaw is made public, automated bots start trying to exploit it within hours. A site that's only checked occasionally is exposed the moment a plugin vulnerability goes public. That's why we monitor your site continuously rather than glancing at it now and then.

Why it matters

WordPress maintenance protects your rankings, your budget, and your reputation

Security is the headline, but it's not the only reason upkeep pays for itself. Here's what neglect actually costs a small business.

01

Stay visible on Google

Google rewards sites that are fast, secure, and work well on a phone. A neglected WordPress site quietly picks up errors, broken pages, and slow load times — and those drag your ranking down month after month. Even the SEO plugins you rely on need updating to keep doing their job. Maintenance protects the visibility you've already worked for.

02

Spend less, not more

Skipping maintenance to save money usually backfires. A hacked WordPress site can cost thousands to clean up and dents the trust you've built. A crash from a missed update means lost enquiries every hour you're offline. A small monthly plan is far cheaper than an emergency fix — think of it as insurance for the website your business runs on.

03

Make the right first impression

For a lot of customers, your website is the first time they meet your business. Slow, broken, or visibly out of date makes people wonder whether you're still trading. A maintained site keeps showing your business at its best — to new customers and returning ones alike.

How we're different

WordPress maintenance done the Loxvik way

The WordPress maintenance market is full of providers who list the same features and never explain what they actually do for you. Here's what sets our WordPress care plans apart.

01

We test every update on a staging copy first

Updates sometimes break things — that's the genuine fear most WordPress owners have. So we never update your live site blind. We apply every update to a private staging copy first, check the site still works, and only then push it live. If something would break, it breaks on the copy, where it doesn't matter.

02

Fully managed — you never log into WordPress

You don't need to understand the dashboard, and you never have to open it. Need a price changed, a photo swapped, a new service added? One message and it's done by us. The relief most clients mention first is simply not having to touch the thing they were scared of breaking.

03

Transparent monthly pricing, no lock-in

Clear monthly plans, listed on this page. No quotes to chase, no tiers that hide the real cost. A 3-month minimum to get you set up properly, then rolling monthly — cancel with 30 days' notice whenever you like.

04

A real person who knows WordPress

When you call, you get someone who understands WordPress and knows your site — not a ticket number and a 48-hour wait. Every WordPress maintenance relationship at Loxvik is founder-led.

  • WordPress core, theme, and plugin updates — tested for compatibility Kept current and applied on a staging copy first, so updates improve your site instead of breaking it.
  • Security hardening and malware monitoring We lock down the common entry points and watch the site continuously — including the places a compromise tends to hide, not just the obvious ones.
  • PHP version management We keep your site on a current, supported version of PHP, so a host's upgrade never takes you offline.
  • Daily off-site backups with one-click restore A clean copy of your site saved every day, stored away from your server. If the worst happens, we roll back fast.
  • Uptime and performance monitoring We know your site is down before you do — and most months, before anyone else notices at all.
  • Small content edits and fixes Update a price, swap an image, fix a broken link. Tell us what you need; we handle it (within your plan).
  • WooCommerce checks, if you sell online For shops, we check the checkout, payments, and order flow — because a broken WooCommerce checkout is lost revenue, not just a bug.
  • A plain-English monthly report What we did, what we caught, and how your site's performing — written for a business owner, not a developer.

Frequently asked

Frequently asked questions about WordPress maintenance

Do I really need a WordPress maintenance plan?

If your website brings in enquiries, takes bookings, or represents your business to customers, then yes. WordPress is updated constantly, and the gap between "fine" and "down" is usually one missed update. A maintenance plan is the difference between catching a problem in hours and discovering it weeks after it's cost you enquiries.

How much does WordPress maintenance cost in the UK?

For most UK small businesses, WordPress maintenance runs between £50 and £150 a month, depending on what's included. Our WordPress Care plan starts at £80/month and covers updates, security, backups, monitoring, and reporting. Care+ at £150/month adds content edits and priority support. To put that in context, a single emergency fix after a hacked or broken WordPress site typically runs into the hundreds or thousands — far more than a year of upkeep. More on this in our guide to <a href="/blog/how-much-does-a-website-cost-uk/">how much a website costs</a>.

What's included in a WordPress care plan?

At a minimum, any decent WordPress care plan should cover core, plugin, and theme updates, security monitoring, regular backups, and uptime tracking. Ours goes further: PHP version management, malware monitoring, performance checks, small content edits, and a plain-English monthly report. The question worth asking any provider: if an update breaks something, is the fix included? With us, it always is.

Will updates break my website?

They can — which is exactly why we never update your live site blind. We test every update on a private staging copy first. If something would break, it breaks on the copy, we sort it there, and your live site only ever sees updates that work. It's the single biggest reason clients move to us from doing it themselves.

Can't I just update WordPress myself?

You can, and the buttons aren't hard to find. The risk is what happens after you press them: an update that clashes with another plugin, a theme that stops displaying right, a checkout that quietly breaks. Doing it safely means a backup, a staging test, and knowing how to undo it if it goes wrong. Most owners would rather not carry that — that's what the plan's for.

Isn't managed WordPress hosting (like WP Engine) enough?

It's a common mix-up, and an important one. Managed WordPress hosting looks after the server your site sits on — speed, server security, server backups. A maintenance care plan looks after the site itself: your plugins, themes, PHP, content, and the fixes when something breaks. Good hosting won't update a vulnerable plugin for you or rebuild a broken page. You usually want both, and they do different jobs.

What happens if my WordPress site gets hacked?

If you're on a plan with us, we restore from a clean off-site backup, find how they got in, close the gap, and get you back online. Because we back up daily and monitor continuously, a hack is a setback we recover from quickly rather than a disaster. If you're not on a plan yet and you've been hacked, call us anyway — we can help with the clean-up.

How often do you update WordPress and plugins?

Security patches and critical plugin updates are applied as soon as they're released and tested — not on a monthly cycle, because attackers don't wait. Routine updates, performance checks, and content reviews run on a monthly schedule, and a fuller audit happens quarterly. The point of a plan is that none of this is left to chance.

Do you manage WooCommerce and online shops?

Yes. Online shops need more attention, not less — a broken checkout is lost revenue, not just a bug. Our WordPress Care+ plan adds checks on your WooCommerce checkout, payments, and order flow.

I didn't build my site — can you still take it over?

Almost always, yes. A lot of our WordPress clients inherited a site from a developer or agency who's since moved on. We start with an audit to understand how it's built and hosted, flag anything that needs fixing first, and then bring it under our care. You keep your site, your domain, and your Google ranking — nothing gets lost.

Does maintaining WordPress help my Google ranking?

It protects it. Google favours sites that are fast, secure, and mobile-friendly, and a neglected WordPress site slowly loses all three — broken pages, slow loading, security warnings, and SEO plugins that have stopped working. Keeping the site maintained keeps those problems from quietly eroding the visibility you've earned.

Isn't a maintenance plan just an extra cost?

It's the cheaper option, not the extra one. A small monthly plan is a fraction of what a single hack clean-up costs, and a tiny fraction of what you lose in enquiries while a broken site is offline. You're not paying for maintenance instead of nothing — you're paying a little now instead of a lot later.
